Andy Doherty
Director of Bands | Delaware Hayes High School
Andy Doherty is the Director of Bands at Delaware Hayes High school in Delaware, Ohio. Mr. Doherty is in his 8th year in this position, directing the Concert, Symphonic, Jazz, and Marching Bands. Under his direction, bands have received five consecutive Superior Ratings at OMEA Large Group Contest, qualified for OMEA State Marching Band Finals every competing year, and consistently made finals at the Mid-States Band Association Championships. The band has performed Nationally in the Light Parade at Disney’s Magic Kingdom and the Outback Bowl, and Internationally in Lahardane, Ireland.
Before coming to Hayes, Mr. Doherty attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio earning a Bachelor's of Music in Music Education in 2012 and a Master's of Music in Music Education in 2019. In addition to his responsibilities at Hayes, he has marched with the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps and also taught at Capital City Percussion as a visual instructor from 2012-2014. In 2013, Capital City Percussion won the WGI Open Class World Championship. |
Alan Notestine
Director of Bands | Dempsey Middle School
Mr. Notestine has been in education since 1991. He started his career at Beechcroft HS, in Columbus, Ohio. He also taught inner-city students at Columbus before becoming an Elementary Principal in 1998. Mr. Notestine came to Delaware in 2000, where he served as the Principal of Woodward Elementary until 2008. In 2008, he returned to the music classroom to teach beginning instrumental students at Willis and follow them through graduation at Hayes. Mr. Notestine received his education at The Ohio State University, graduating in 1985 (Bachelor Agricultural Economics), 1991 (Bachelor Music Education) and 1994 (Master Education Administration). He is a proud alumnus of The Ohio State University Marching Band and actively performs with Alumni Band activities, including the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer. He enjoys spending his free time on his 10 acre farm where he raises chickens, honeybees and loves to garden. Mr. Notestine has two adult children, Connor (fiance - Lisa) and Alaina (husband - David) who both reside in the Central Ohio area.

Delaware Hayes Marching Band
The Delaware Hayes Marching Band is the most visible aspect of the band program in the community. The Marching Band performs at all home and away football games, marches in the Delaware parades, and competes in OMEA and MSBA competitions.
Delaware Hayes symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is a co-curricular wind ensemble that features the finest musicians in the Hayes Band program. The Symphonic band continues refinement of musical skills, and performs music of the highest quality. The Symphonic Band competes in OMEA Large Group Contest at the District and State level. All students who enroll in Symphonic Band are REQUIRED to be a member of the marching band and pep band as the marching arts are crucial to the development of fine young musicians. Symphonic/Marching band participation also counts as a gym waiver.
Delaware Hayes concert Band
Concert Band performs music with a focus on developing and refining individual and ensemble playing skills. The Concert Band performs music of high quality and appropriate difficulty and competes in OMEA Large Group Contest at the District and State level. All students who enroll in Concert Band are REQUIRED to be a member of the marching band and pep band as the marching arts are crucial to the development of fine young musicians. Concert/Marching band participation also counts as a gym waiver.
Delaware Hayes jazz ensembles
The Hayes Big Band is our large group jazz ensemble. This is a volunteer based, after school activity. The Big Band performs on the spring concert and focuses on swing, and modern music.
The Euclid Ave Jazz is a small jazz combo that focuses on improvisation. EAJ performs concerts in the community.

Delaware Hayes Pep Band
The Pep Band performs at Girls and Boys basketball games. All students enrolled in the Hayes Band program are required to perform at six basketball games.
Dempsey Jazz Band
The Dempsey Jazz Band is an all-volunteer band that meet before school for practices. They learn and perform various type of music including Jazz, Rock, Latin & Funk. The Jazz Band performs at school concerts alongside the other Dempsey Bands.
Dempsey 7th & 8th Grade Bands
Both groups perform their own music for two concerts throughout the year and will perform at adjudicated contests each Spring. Classes meet 5 days a week for 40 minutes each day. Students will have opportunities to work in small groups, individually, use technology and further their skills as a member of these ensembles.
Dempsey 6th Grade Band
Students begin their journey in DCS bands in 6th grade. All three staff members see every student for 50 minutes a day in like-instrument sectionals. The 6th grade band performs on the All-City Band Concert in December and at the Dempsey Spring Concert.
